What to do in september?

by Jebir Online Now Aug 29, 2010 at 9:04 AM

Hi there :-) So, september is closing in again, and we will be at Camping Warnsborn from the 13-19. - our 4th visit there, and loving it - and Arnhem in general! We are mainly there to take part in the commemmoration of Market-Garden, but have decided to spend a couple of "extra" days in Arnhem - and we are wondering how we should spend them :-) We are planning on visiting Burgers Zoo (been there a couple of years ago, and loved it), and the Airborne Museum. Other than that, our schedule is empty until the commemmoration starts. As mentioned, we have been to Arnhem a couple of times before, and have seen the tourist-side of the commemmoration, so we are mainly looking for 2 things; - good tips as to what to do in the days before the commemmoration - sights that we need to see, funny, quirky little shops or events that we can't miss - and if there's something we can't miss during the commemmoration. We have been to the drops at Ginkel Heath the last couple of years (and will be going again), and the service in Oosterbeek sunday - but what else should we look for? Our main interests is in history, but all advice is welcome :-) Thanks in advance, Mikkel (Note; we are travelling in car, so we can leave Arnhem for the area nearby too, if there's something we just can't miss)

Have you been to the Open Air Museum? You easily can spend a day there and see a lot of the Netherlands at one spot. PJ

Kröller Muller Museum in National Park the Hoge Veluwe. Without a car you would have to travel by train from Arnhem to Ede/Wageningen and further by bus to the museum (see: kmm.nl/page/11/Addressdirect... happy travels Jaap

Kröller Muller Museum has one of the country's finest art collections, including Van Gogh. The period you mention (Sept.) can be good weather to go cycling. When you do visit above museum, you can use the free white bikes inside the park and go to one of my favourite place: St. Hubertus hunting lodge, which is situated in Park Hoge Veluwe. It's a wonderful example of the famous Art Deco architect Berlage. Of course you will have been in Oosterbeen (Airborne Museum). You are just 1 weekend too late for the Airborne walk (have you done that one). It's always the 1st Saturday of September. I recommend the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem http://www.mmkarnhem.nl/ It was across from my school and I spent many a happy hour there. I also recommend a visit to the little town Zutphen (33 kms from Arnhem). It's a beautiful town, big enough for some nice shopping but also old and quaint. If you do go to Zutphen by car, don't take the motorway. The route I'm describing below is one which I have taken countless times from my toddler years all through childhood and adolescense. I can just take that route now in my mind and enjoy my memories of it. Here goes: From Camping Warnsborn, take the N785 direction Rozendaal and Velp and keep on driving along to De Steeg, Ellecom, Dieren, Brummen, etc. onto the N348 (do NOT go on the motorway A348!). It's a lovely road, the first part lined with trees and old houses or manors. If you feel like it, you could turn off at Brummen towards Bronkhorst (you'll cross the IJssel river on a little ferry). Bronkhorst looks like a tiny village but is in fact the smallest town (historically) in The Netherlands. You could meander back to your route from there. Another option along that route is a visit to Middachten castle (just outside Arnhem, near De Steeg. http://www.middachten.com/home/9

Visit one (or two) of the beautiful castles in and around Arnhem. Kasteel Zijpendaal in Arnhem (inside a wonderful park): mooigelderland.nl/index.php?... Kasteel Rozendael in Rozendaal (including great gardens): mooigelderland.nl/index.php?... Kasteel Doorwerth in Doorwerth (including the hunting museum): mooigelderland.nl/index.php?... Kasteel Doornenburg http://www.kasteeldoornenburg.nl/ You can also find more info on my pages on Arnhem and surrounding places. Greets, Paul
