Direct train or bus service from Argeles-sur-Mer

by stardog2win Online Now Sep 4, 2006 at 1:13 PM

Am spending a couple of weeks in October and want to do day trips or overnighters.
Is there direct train or bus service from Argles-sur-mer and
to what destinations? How long does it take on train or bus
and is there anywhere one can get to by cycling? Thanks so much.

Hello again. You are right on a rail line so can go pretty much where you please. The train web site is voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_Sv...

If that doesn't work, go to http://www.voyages-sncf.com and look for the British flag or a choice of languages and choose English.

As far as bicycling, you are in bicycle heaven. Slightly northwest of Argeles-sur-Mer is my favorite beach in France. The stretch of road D81a between Canet Plage and St. Cyprien Plage goes right along the Mediterranean. It is a lovely soft sand beach on the sea side and a nature preserve on the land side. The beach is wide and lovely. There are a lot of families there and in the evening, the wind surfers come out. It's fun to watch them. If there's a wind, the surf is very nice too.

Collioure is an easy bike ride and another favorite place. It is a gorgeous French village, home of the Fauvist art movement and has a chateau and a charming double harbor. There are artists set up along the quay and a quaint Old Town to visit. (There is also a train station if you want to take the train.)

Visit Perpignan, the French town with Catalan overtones. They even have Catalan street dancing in the evenings.

The entire area is steeped in Cathar history. See as much as you can. That area is wild and wonderful.

Again, thanks so much. I'm delighted I can get
to some places by bicycle because I imagine
in October there aren't that many cafes/markets
open in the immediate area. Am extremely
interested in the Cathars and gnostics.
My accomodations just got switched from Ohara's
camping del mar to their recent acquisition
at Jouncalore. Do you know it? Hope it is
as nice. It is my first trip to France
so I am excited. Regards, Stardog2win

We haven't run into a lot of closings in that area. It's not as touristy as some other areas so the businesses are more likely to stay open all year.

We've camped in the Narbonne area, but not at Argeles. Most of the campgrounds we saw were very nice. I suspect you'll be fine.

There used to be a special pass to the Cathar Sites that gave you a good discount. Ask at the tourist info to see if it's still available.

    Have a good trip.
