Help planning 5 days in Arequipa and Puno

      Peru May 12, 2013 at 10:54 AM

      Hi guys!

I continue on my quest to make up a decent itinerary for my trip to Peru which is gonna happen 2 weeks from now.

After my Cusco itinerary taken care of, I need to decide what I'm gonna to with the rest of my time.

I'll take a night bus to Arequipa May the 30th and arrive there early in the morning of July the 1rst.

My plane back home leaves from Cusco June the 5th, in the afternoon.

      My rough plan is

June – 1 - Arrive at Arequipa, tour the city
June – 2 - Tour to Colca Canyon
      June – 3 - Titicaca
      June – 4 -
      June – 5 - Back to Cusco

I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me.

1 – I'm finding it hard to come up with a tour around Arequipe the first day. Do you guys have anny suggestion? Should I hire a tour or do it by muself? Also, is there any places you guys would recommend hiring at least a guide (such as Convento de Santa Calatina)?

2 – After the tour, on June the 2nd, hould I take a bus to Puno bu myself, sleep there and take a tour to Titicaca the next morning? Or should I stay ate Arequipa and hire a tour that leaves from there?

3 – I still have one day left. Any ideas what I could do with it? I thought I maybe could get back to Cusco em try a daytip from there. Maybe to the salt mines I've heard about. Or maybe try some daytrip to the jungle. Is there such a thing?

I'm used to organizing my trips by myself, but I'm finding Pery a hard one. Any help from you guys is much appreciated!

      Cheers!

From Cusco to Puno and back to Cusco in 4 days

      Peru May 9, 2013 at 9:43 PM

      Hi!

I'm planning a trip to Peru with my girlfriend. Our base will be Cusco and we still have 4 days free to spend. I was planning to use then to visite Puno.

I've searched but couldn't find any good info about the buses. Would you guys recommend us a "tourist bus"?

My idea was to get one going to Puno and a regular bus going back to Cusco. Is that a good idea?

Is there any place I can book and see the buses schedules so I can plan those days best? All buses websites I've found online lack such info.

      Thanks guys

We are a couple travel to Lima in June, will rent private properties to stay. We'd just hang out in a neighborhood where it provides a lots of restaurants & cafes, also near beach. Which neighborhood should we pick? I heard about Miraflores, is that very popular?

      Help witH Peru Itinerary

      Cusco May 16, 2013 at 11:19 AM

      Hello Travel Experts!

We just booked our international tickets to Peru and I need some help planning my itinerary there. We're getting into Lima on June 28th and will be headed back to the US on July 7th. Here's what I have so far:

June 29th- morning flight to Puerto Maldonado - 3 nights in Refugio Amazonas
July 2nd - fly to Cucsco (afternoon flight) - 2 nights in Cusco (tues, wed nights)
July 4th (thu) - stay in olly (SV sights, Pisac)
July 5th (Fri) - early morning train to MP, spend day in MP, stay in Aguas calientes - Friday night
July 6th (Sat) - train back to Cusco. Spend last day and night relaxing in Cusco
July 7th (Sun) - early morning flight to Lima, intl flight back to US at 2:15 in the afternoon.

Couple of questions regarding this itinerary:
      1. Does it make sense to spend 3 nights in PEM, or should I make it 2 nights and spend 1 extra day in the Cusco region?
      2. With my current itinerary - I have 3 nights for Cusco - is that too much? Should I instead head back to Lima on July 6th Saturday and spend the day and night in Lima?
      3. Is one night enough in Olly? I can also do 1 night in cusco, 2 nights in Olly, and then 1 night again in Cusco on the way back on Sat night?

      Would love some feedback!!
By the way, we were thinking Refugio Amazonas for the rainforest stay - anyone have any feedback on that?

      Thanks!!!

      Backpacking-alone..

      Peru Apr 29, 2013 at 1:13 PM

Hi. I'm looking at backpacking Cuzco Peru and wondering if anyone can offer advice. I'm going solo and it will be my first ever time going so far alone. As a female I am worried but trying not to be so I am asking for some advice on the state of hostels, transport to and from the airport, getting around etc. Any tips that would yey or ney the whole trip idea.
I'm also contemplating Panama city as well. I'll be leaving from Calgary which does not offer much by way of all inclusives so again going to do the backpack thing. Panama I would like to see a beach so any ideas on how or where to go from the heart of the city would be great.

    • 17" Laptop Good for Perpetual Traveller?

      Peru May 13, 2013 at 11:38 AM

      Hi,

I've been travelling for just over a year now with my 15" Macbook, and it's been wonderful. I spend a lot of time on my computer because I work from it wherever I go, and it's very important to me.

My travel style is as minimalistic as possible (except when it comes to technology), normally Ill go around with a carryon luggage and a big backpacker bag, with several smaller bags in the backpacker bag (eg. laptop bag, backpack), and I travel pretty much on a whim (eg. I never know where I'm going more than 1-2 weeks in advance of going there). Generally I do pretty much calm stuff like beaches and temples and take it easy, and I try to stay out of big cities, but I may be doing some stuff in the Amazon soon (no cliff jumping or windsurfing or anything like that). Overall I would say it's possible that I'll go anywhere, except for warzones and other similarly dangerous places.

I like speed on my laptops and have been feeling like getting a bigger screen to really feel more at home and luxurious on the go, with a faster processor as I multitask quite a lot. I've been a computer guy for while so I am sold on the technical aspects of it, though I've heard of lots of perpetual travellers ditching their bigger laptops for 11" and 13" and similar, but I couldn't work on that small a computer regularly. My question is that based on this style of travel, does anybody have experiences travelling with a 17" Laptop, and would it be better to use a 15"?

What to do? Where to go?

      Peru May 4, 2013 at 2:26 PM

      Hello everyone!
We are experienced travelers but this will be our first time to South America.
We just booked a flight to Lima from December 22, 2013 to January 4, 2014 - All 14 days.
We are in our 40's, we are NOT backpackers, we like the AC and hot shower, we don't like mass (organized) tourism and prefer to go everywhere on our own. If we rent a car while traveling we usually don't make hotel reservations and drive until we find a town that captures our heart. We like good surprises and unpredictability. We rather fly than take a train and we rather take a train than take a bus (oh those bus drivers in Vietnam - they really are......different). We rather eat at the market with locals than at the hotel. We don't mind if our food is wrapped in the newspaper but we don't like cockroaches in our hotel room. We enjoyed rural Laos as much as we enjoyed Paris.
      You got the picture ;-)

      My questions are:
      1. What should we see in Peru other than Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu? We like seafood, cute little friendly towns/beach towns, authentic villages etc.
      2. How much time should we spend in Lima if we are not that much interested in museums but would love spending our time sampling Peruvian cousine (seafood only! NO meat!), visiting local markets and walking around admiring the city. 2 nights on arrival and 2 nights before departure? Is that enough? Would that leave us enough time to see other places?
      3. Altitude sickness. If we are not planning to chew on coca leaves ;-) are there any good remedies available locally? Oxygen in a can? - as you can see I know nothing about it, but I would hate feeling miserable in one of the most beautiful place on earth.
      4. Peru during X-mass and New Years Eave? Is it more challenging? If we won't make our bookings now, is it going to be fully booked in December?
      5. Generally... What to do? Where to go?
We would love to hear your stories!!!!!!

I do read guide books and do diligent research on line, but the best and most interesting advices are always from those who just came back :-)

      Thank You!!!!!

Advise for couple travelling for 6 (or 9) days in Peru

      Peru May 7, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Hi, my girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Peru this month.

We're planning on arriving to Cuzco May the 28th early in the morning and leaving at July the 3rd, at 15h40.

That's our main plan, but if absolutely necessary in order to be abble to se what we want, we may be abble to get there at May the 25th, at 11 AM.

So, in the most probable scenerario we'll have 6 full days to spend there. In the other scenerario we'll have 9 days.

My doubt is about our itinerary. There are things I absolutely would like to see, but they are so far apart. Machu Picchu, are the number one, of course. But I'd love to get to know Titicaca and the Nazca Lines.

Is that even possible in our timeframe?

What would you guys recommend us as a rough itinerary for those days?

      Thanks a lot guys!

Things to do in Arequipa if not hiking the canyons

by sakuyaini Online Now Mar 15, 2009 at 1:11 AM

Hi, I've read the forums on Arequipa and most, if not all, of the posts talk about hiking the canyons near Arequipa. I am taking my 12-yr old daughter with me and so, I am not thinking of hiking the canyons since I'm not sure how she'll handle the hike (and altitude). I also have history of getting altitude sickness so I dont want to risk getting sick when I have my daughter with me. That said, I still want to visit Arequipa ... is it still worth flying to Arequipa and staying there for about 2 days, just exploring the city ? will there be other things to do there ? Thanks Maria

What are the best tour groups that offer llama treking or horsebackriding in Colca / Catahuasi? At most, we would be spending a total of 7 days in Arequipa and the canyon-area. Also, if we can only do one of the two canyons, which is the better option and offers better landscapes for photo ops? We're planning on a summer trip. Thanks.

The problem is that I have found it is very expensive to fly from Peru to Santiago. I have cheaper alternatives, such as flying from Lima to Arequipa for85 and then travel to Arica and fly to Santiago for150, but given our short time, I was hoping there would be a cheaper quick alternative. My preference is to just spend all our time in Peru, but I thought I should check it out for her. Thanks

I am trying to fit as much into 2 weeks as possible without trying too much. I was planning to get to Arequipa on August 18th and leave for Cusco during the afternoon of Aug 21st. Is this realistic? What should I try and do with my two full days there? - Colca Canyon; El Misti; should I go straight to Chivay? Will I need to aclimatise to the altitude? - we are likely to go there straight from Lima. If this isn't realistic, I will probably just stay in Cuzco, with a few days in Lima. I don't fancy Lake Titicaca and my girlfriend won't go to the jungle at Puerto Maldonado. Any advice would be great, thanks for reading. Steve
