Doing the Shackleton/Christmas cruise this year on MV FRAM. Would love to meet any other pax to compare packing notes, etc. and just to have friends on board! Uncertain how many layers to pack and don't have many as I winter in Panama. SO, wonder what experience others have renting layers in Ushuaia if it turns out to be really cold when we arrive. Won't need boots or jacket apparently provided. Happy to offer advice on Panama if anyone wants to travel by/way/of. It can sometimes be cheaper than direct from US or Canada. Also know a bit about Argentina.
Hi - take a look at www.cruisecritic.com. You may find some info there under "Other Cruise Lines" or "Ports of Call" - Antarctica. Have a great time!

I went to Antarctica in early January 2009, so in terms of timing it's quite close to your cruise dates this year. Based on my experience, getting a good down jacket is the key. Beneath that down jacket, you can just wear a thermal layer plus a sweater/turtleneck. That'll be sufficient. Because the climate is so dry in Antarctica, it's easy to beat the cold by just layering wisely (unlike places where it's cold AND humid! That sort of cold goes straight to the bones). I personally just brought my down jacket that I regularly use for -15C to 8C and it worked like a charm. Definitely bring layers because there may be times when they take you on a hike up a mountain. It can actually be pretty hard work so by the end of it you'd want to take off some layers. Hope this helps!
