I am hoping to do an Antarctica expedition next Dec,Jan or Feb. I have been reading various forums on the best types of ships ...affordable...best excursions...etc...I saw on a few sites that some people recommended going to Ushuaia and then trying to book on a ship at the last minute. A couple of people said they did it and got great discounts.... Does anyone have any experience with this? If so, is this advisable? If I were to do this last minute, what discount is usual? Also which ship would offer the Best Expedition Experience for the most affordable cost? I am less about all the amenities and more about the experience and learning about the area...wildlife...and taking photos. What time of year is the best time to get on a ship at the last minute AND see wildlife. I have been told Feb and early March...I was hoping to go in December but can go at any time. Any advice on traveling to Antarctica on a budget would be greatly appreciated(and I know this question will make many of you laugh out loud or at least smile!)... Thank you for any help.
Bookmark. I didn´t laugh. I think(knowing nothing, it is just a "feeling") it is almost imposible to go on a budget to such a "unique" place. I guess, that if you have time you can go to the harbour as you said, and maybe one day somebody won´t be there at the departure time, and they will always prefeer to put you in for few than nothing. Good luck.

Antarctica on a Budget... is possible if you'd work on boat, but... don't think do what passenger can do, you'll be on duty.

I have not been to Antarctica yet, but it is on my list. In my own research and discussions with people, I too have come across a few who successfully got discounts for the last minute deals. Being budget, or 'on the cheap' is all relative. When most cruises cost4K ~30K, the a1.5K+ discount is large, but still does not make it a typical budget trip.

Possible? No. :-) Sorry, but that's it. As already said travelling as passenger is never gonna be cheap. I've been in Ushuaia 2 years ago and had a look to last minute prices. Even if you get the best deal ever you can't spend less than 3000USD for a week. It may be half of regular price...but still not cheap. Roberto

In Ushuaia there are a bunch of tour offices specializing in last minute trips however last season I think the lowest rates were3000-3500 depending on what route you did. More and more people appear to be taking advantage of the lower last minute rates locally so prices are a bit higher than they used to be, and no longer as great of a bargain. It still generally cheaper but unless you go to Argentina for a few weeks you're not really going to have a lot of flexibility. Az..
