Transportation to Antarctica

I am looking into an inexpensive way to travel to Antarctica. I have been told that you can wait in Ushuai for a cancellation on a boat thereby getting a cheaper fare (600 vs 3,000). How frequently do boats travel to Antarctica? What are the chances of getting a spot? Would I be traveling in the cargo? Does it usually take 8 days or 10? What would the temperature be like in mid Dec? Thanks so much for any responses Roxanne
