RE: Hotel or farm house to stay in Annecy?
I don't personally know of anyplace to stay but there are several smaller towns around the lake which are very beautiful and may have cheaper prices than in Annecy.
There is a regional tourism website you can look at which has suggested tourist routes depending on your taste, such as visiting old stone forts near Chambery, doing wine region tours, visiting natural park reserves (Vanoise, Bauges) etc. which you can find at http://www.rhonealpes-tourisme.com/ and is in English. You can also check out the Haute Savoie tourism page at tourism.savoiehautesavoie.co... and click on GB for English. There are B&Bs listed under what is called "Clévacances" which is a room in a person's chalet at this link tourism.savoiehautesavoie.co... and under Gites de France at http://188.8.131.52/GDF/analyse_param.php?DEP=74&ACC=H&LAN=AN&ORI=CDT7374&OPE=CDT7374
Hope this helps.
