2 Day Trip from Amsterdam

by bronrowe Online Now Jul 26, 2012 at 4:12 PM

We are going to be in Amsterdam from the 30th of July to the 5th of August. Was interested in getting out of Amsterdam for a night or two so that we could experience another city close by. Was considering Hague or Haarlem, but would like to hear any thoughts on these or any other cities.

Haarlem very nice place to visit and so is Leiden. Haarlem is lees than 1/2 hour trip Leiden only an hour or so you could see both in one day and go in the other direction the other day Gouda maybe. It's a very small country.

For a 2 day escape from Amsterdam, you could go to any city in The Netherlands. It would be good to know your interests, since the answers could be very broad. Beach? Nature? More museums, of a particular kind? Night life? Have a look at 2 cities that are at the extreme ends of our country. Both are about 2 hrs 20 mins train ride from Amsterdam. Groningen (up far north) is a city with a lot of students but also old-city charm and the wonderful Groningen Museum. In the 'deep' south, approx same distance from Amsterdam as Groningen is Maastricht which has a whole different atmosphere, and also a good night life. In my opinion a most un-Dutch city in lifestyle. You could go to the border of 3 countries there: Germany, Netherlands, Belgium. Both cities are as far as you can get: 2 hrs, 20 mins by train. So you see, any city in NL would be within your range for an overnight stay. In general I could recommend both cities, but all depends on what you want to do.

Pieter, I knew there was a similar question just recently and you have saved me the task of finding when it was. As one poster says, you can go anywhere in less than 3 hours, so it would be helpful to know your interests, etc. For a real contrast, there's Rotterdam as well!

The huge church in Haarlem is certainly worth a visit as well as just walking the streets----was interesting seeing the smallish red light district compared to A'Dam.....You could also consider Zandvoort (not much further down from Haarlem) for a beach visit.....

hawkhead, Rotterdam would be my first choice being my favourite city. It doesn't give its charm so easily.

My favourite cities not far from Amsterdam are Rotterdam and Utrecht, though both totally different.
