Need Help Narrowing Down Location

by lbaz95 Online Now Jun 18, 2012 at 7:46 AM

Hello, I apologize, but I posted something similar before. I have now done some research and probably found 20-25 apartments/houseboats that would work for us. I really would appreciate some help knowing about locations/neighborhoods. We like to shop (quirky or unique, not chains, not expensive designers), eat, and do the typical tourist things. We don't want to stay in the red light district (I don't exactly know where that is because I am in the preliminary planning stages) or any place where there would be wild parties all night log/a NYC Times Square type area. Obviously, safety would be our number one priority. Access to public transportation would help as well. Once I have more ideas of neighborhoods, I will post some specific apartments and seek input. Thank you.

Rough guides guidebooks are very good too

The RLD is along the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal; but that canal is so small, no house boats are in it. Wild parties can sometimes be expected at and around the Leidseplein; but also there little house boats are located. So, I can assure you that the majority of house boat will be at good locations. Some may require a few tram stops to travel to the shops you want to visit, but that is with most things in Amsterdam. The downtown inner canal belt is not that big and very good walkable. My experiences is that a slow 4 hours walk (even with a stop at a terres) will bring you back and forth trough most of the center. PJ

I apologize, but I am feeling very overwhelmed by the number of choices. I am going to list quite a few below (I tried to narrow the list and cut about 2/3 of the original list). I also am having a hard time figuring out the areas and how they correspond to the recommended areas. (I am not used to all of these really long street names.) I think we would prefer being in Jordaan, but have listed some others that we like that appear to be in other areas. Claim Jordaan/close to shopping #1 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... claim in Jordaan #2 holiday-velvet.com/amsterdam... claim in Jordaan, backs up to abandoned building (not a plus) #3 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... claim close to shopping #4 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... drawback is only 1 bedroom #5 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... #6 perfectvisit.nl/?subID=326&h... expensive Really like but don’t know about neighborhood #7 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... #8 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... #9 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... If there are some that are really good or really bad, that would help A LOT. Thank you so much.

OK I had a look at them all. I cannot judge any of them being bad. Personal I would avoid some, due to traffic noise; but all these apartment seems to be very modern renovated and should be insulated for trafiic noise. My 2 cents: #1 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... claim in Jordaan Close to the Haarlemmerstraat with some fun shops. In walking distance of the Central Station (easy for transportation) Close to where my fav orite shopping route starts #2 holiday-velvet.com/amsterdam... Close the forst 3 of the Nine Little Streets (shopping) and the Prinsengracht canal #3 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... Close to Klavertoren Shopping Center and Kalverstraat; but probably not the shops you are looking for. Can be noisy in the weekend. In walking distance of the Flower Market. #4 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... The Westertstraat is close with some shops and good restaurants. Not the best location #5 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... From the pictures the interior look promising. For outside; that’s the same as #4 #6 perfectvisit.nl/?subID=326&h... expensive As #1, and probably in a quiet small street with no traffic. #7 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... Very nice view over the inner harbour, but at a busy major street. Central Station and Little China within walking distance. #8 homeaway.com/vacation-rental... As #7 Could be the same? #9 apartments-unlimited.com/cit... Great Canal apartment. Equal distance to Rijksmuseum and Rembrandt square/Stopera/Waterlooplein market. PJ

Hello again. When you say that #4 is not a good location, is that because it is unsafe, noisy, not centrally located, not convenient? With regard to #5, is it the same location and the same reasons? Thank you.

Let's say that location is smewhat less attractive, being further away from nicer spots, like some of the others. I cannot call it unsafe, because relatively all these locations are within the old cabal belt. Crime (if any) is not limited to the RLD erea. It's best to use your common street sense to be safe. Otherwise read this warning tip I wrote: "PICKPOCKETS" - Pick Pocketing / Street crime Tip by pieter_jan_v I saw comments by users of these comments on some of these website; that should give you another impression/judgement.
