We want to stay in downtown amsterdam for 1 night before we fly out to New york. We would like to be able to walk around andd see the sights during the day, and then take the train or bus to the airport. Can anyone reccomend a nice hotel in a good area with easy access to train or busses. thanks you,
Your most convenient access to transport would be the IBIS hotel at Central Station. It literally straddles the tracks at the western end of the platforms. As for the area, it's busy of course, being a transport hub, but only a very short walk, like 2 or 3 minutes, to the picturesque Grachtengordel and Jordaan areas. From Central station, frequent trains leave for the airport. The trip takes about 25 minutes.

Most downtown hotels within the canal belt are close to a tram stop. A tram ride to the Central Station will not be more than 10 minutes and the train ride to Schiphol Airport is 20 minutes. So, you have many hotels to choose from. I would say, use our Amsterdam hotel tool at: Amsterdam Hotels PJ

I can personally (and highly) recommend the Singel Hotel: http://singelhotel.nl/welcome/ 5 minutes walk from the station on the Singel canal, quiet, historic building, good breakfast, friendly staff, easy walking distance to sights/sites etc etc. Unusually for Europe, it really is cheaper if you book direct through their website rather than an agency. Most of the hotels immediately around Centraal Station are unprettilly basic but for value for money I like the Botel which is a floating hotel docked just over the river from Centraal Station. Rooms are spacious by Hamster Jam standards, clean, comfortable and staff are friendly and helpful. Getting backwards and forwwards to ther city is a couple of minutes ride on the freebie ferry which shuttles constantly from early until late. http://www.amstelbotel.nl/index.php
