I'll be in Amsterdam just for 1 night and want to try rijsttafel. We are not huge eaters (there are 4 adults and a teenager) and 3 of us don't eat beef or pork. We would like to find a good restaurant, nice atmosphere (doesn't need to be fancy, authentic is better) with REASONABLE prices. Somewhere locals might enjoy. Thoughts? I really appreciate the advice, thank you in advance to those who reply!
The Dutch East Indies, as Indonesia was known for those 340 years, gave much to the Netherlands; one of the best gifts was its native cuisine, known as rijsttafel (Dutch for rice table). I am suggesting that you have dinner at Sahid Jaya (www.sahidjaya.nl) at Reguliersdwarsstraat, 26 for a great rijsttafel meal. We took our first dinner in the garden of Restaurant Sahid Jaya. The garden offers a view of the rears of a number of buildings with beautiful Baroque architecture; it is a pleasure to look at while enjoying your meal. There are meat and vegetarian rijsttafel available. There is a great deal of food included in a single order. Perhaps you can arrange with the very accommodating staff for two people to share one order. This would help with your eating habits and with the bottom line.
