Some place I can see the stars ?

by flavian942 Online Now Apr 12, 2012 at 2:30 PM

Hey :) Where can I go in Amsterdam or close by to best see the stars at night ? Something like a observatory or a remote high place, away from city lights and light pollution, so I can see the stars beautifully and all of them. Preferably romantic :) Thank you

There are no high places in The Netherlands. And the Western part of the country is massively urbanized so the night sky is mostly not to be seen. I might suggest the island of Texel (pronounced 'Tessle')which you reach by train to den Helder, then a ferry. Rent a bike and cycle to the Northernmost point. Then it will be darkish.

Thx! Any place, as best you can think of would do. High remote building, castle, open rooftop, anything. Don't people from Holland watch the stars ? :))

No doubt they do, but given how densely populated it is, remote really doesn't exist there, and a high building wouldn't be any place remote. Perhaps the northermost coastal reaches of the provinces of Groningen or Friesland would suit, but you run into transport issues unless you're driving.

From Amsterdam a remote high place is The 'leaning tower of Leeuwarden, Groningen, Friesland' - yes, it is equally slanting as the one in Pisa

No, we don't look at the stars :) We send Andre Kuiper to the ISS to take pictures of Amsterdam like this one: flickr.com/photos/astro_andr... The closest dark spot is just North of Amsterdam. PJ

I have spent many evening hours lying flat on my back in the Vondelpark watching stars---on warm summer evenings preferably---very romantic!

When I was still living in the Netherlands me and a couple of friends would go to one of the Wadden Islands if we wanted to get away from things. These isllands are probably the most "remote" you can get in the Netherlands, and you do get amazing skies at night (if the weather cooperates). But the trip there takes half a day... That's remote for you...

Yes, Texel is the easiest one to reach from Amsterdam, but if you can find your way to lovely Schiermonnikoog you'll be very happy.
