friends, please tell me the nicest places to see in Amsterdam day & night), and where the real good food and shopping in your city is. i've got a whole two days to spend in Amsterdam, and i certainly will NOT do any museums or parks :) thank you all in advance..!!
There's a million and one things to do in Amsterdam without museums and parks. The first thing to do is to take a canal boat tour which will give you a perfect introduction to the city. Personally I liked the Canal Bus which isn't a formal tour as such but the boats have recorded commentaries and there are three separate routes. If you buy your ticket in the morning it is valid until midday the following day and so you can take your time, stopping off wherever you fancy. Then, having had your intro you can get on with the serious business of eating and shopping. Rather than bore you with too much detail here why not drop into my Amsterdamm page for a "Museum and Park Free" viewpoint - "Hamster Jam!" - Amsterdam by johngayton Enjoy Amsterdam!

The Jordaan area and the "9 straatjes" (9 streets) is very nice to walk around, shop etc, http://www.de9straatjes.nl/ The Kalverstraat/Nieuwedijk is famous for its shopping, many different (dump) stores, kalverstraat.nl/index-en.htm... Upper class shopping in the PC Hooftstraat...Bring your wallet! pchooftstraat.nl/homepage.ht... The village Ouderkerk aan de Amstel has several very good restaurants, see my page "Ouderkerk aan de Amstel" - Ouderkerk aan de Amstel by Pijlmans Cheers Dennis

If Amsterdam is new to you, start with a canal boat tour. I don't know your definition of real good food. Go for a traditional Indonesian "Rijsttafel" or one of the restaurant with a kitchen to your liking. Have a look at: iens.nl/en/restaurant/amster... for an impression. There are shopping streets with the well-known names (nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat). Specialised shops at the so-called "Nine Little Streets" (don't miss those) and the upper class shops (PC Hooftstraat). If you are a party animal, The Leidseplein area will be your evening/night destination. Have a look at my Amsterda, General and maybe Off the Beaten path tips for more inspiration. PJ

Hi Stranger! www.likealocal.nl might be of any help. in case not: 1 don't take a canal tour! instead take the tram, straight to the 9straatjes to do the shopping. food and shopping garanteed. 2 going out: bars in Jordaan or Pijp area [full with it], for more disco like things try Panama, Paradiso or Melkweg. 3 next day, relax at the beach! [two days shopping is too much ain't it ;-) of course only when the wheater is nice. take train straight from amsterdam central to zandvoort aan zee. Don't forget to bring your bathing suit or to buy one! Enjoy.

Hi, if you like walking then go from squares to squares around the river. It is charming in the evening too. And why not taking a cruise. Great Traveller

yeh. Calverstraat is a whole lot of shops to browse along!! Depends on what kind of stuff you are shopping for. In this street you will find ALL kinds of fasion clothes on sale. As has been said PC Hoofstraat is the designer shop area, and it has the best Deli in the city in my opinion. Used to be called Pasta Di Mama, but is nw Il Tricolore (I think) Just a few marble-topped tables to enjoy the deli food and the list of sandwich fillings (mouth watering at the thought!) and variety of bread rolls make for the most delicious 'broodjes'
