Stay away from the bars at the main squares.

PJ is right: just stay away from the main squares and tourist areas and you should be fine.
We found Amsterdam in general to be a reasonable place for lifting a pint, and what your exchange rate being much better than ours ( I live in the U.S.) you shouldn't have any trouble stretching your pounds.

If you're for cheap beer at a supermarket, then Lidl (supermarket) has 0.5 l cans of excellent German beer at around 70 eurocents per can. Even Bitburger is about 89 cents, if I remember correctly (I usually buy Veltsins). Same goes for Aldi, a similar low priced supermarket chain.
