Saturdays in Jerusalem

by bethreymatias Online Now Jul 16, 2012 at 7:11 PM

Is it correct that on Saturdays, most if not all shops are closed in Jerusalem? Buses and taxis as means of transportation do not operate on these days? Does that mean the entrance to Holy Land is closed on a Saturday? Thanks for any information and advise.

Whilst Saturday is indeed Shabbat, it does not mean that the whole of Israel closes down. The border crossing is open (as are airports) but state run buses do not run - only private sheruts (mini buses - shared taxis) and taxis. Once in Jerusalem, things are open (particularly in the non-Jewish quarters of the Old City and East Jerusalem) but most shops, restaurants, cafes etc are closed until 1 hour after sunset when the sabbath has passed. Taxis run all day - just less of them dependent on the drivers - but no buses or light railway. Some restaurants ARE open during Saturday - the non-kosher ones who target non-religious Jewish clientele (just by being open on the sabbath they are deemed as non-kosher) - but not many. But you will not starve :)

Thanks so much for the reply! My husband and I are thinking of leaving Amman for Jerusalem on Friday morning of Sept 14, which is one day before the Rosh Hashanah for fear that we may not be able to move around if we leave on the 15th, a Saturday. At least we are already in Jerusalem hopefully by Friday mid-afternoon and perhaps we should start moving around as soon as we arrive so we could see many places. Do you think it's ok to plan to go back to Amman from Jerusalem on the 17th which is still Rosh Hashanah in Jordan? I believe the bridge will not be open the whole day. We are to catch a plane later in the afternoon back to the Philippines. I have been reviewing websites related to transportation and timing between Jordan and Israel, particularly Amman and Jerusalem (but I'd love to visit Nazareth, too!) that have somehow shaped our plans but I need some kind of confirmation from kind people like you who are more knowledgeable. Salamat po!
