Hi, just planning second part of our 2012 hols. We will be spending a couple of weks in Darwin in March 2012 and plan to go to Alice for a few days. We are thinking about the GHAN train. Can anyone advise the best and cheapest way to book. Also thoughts of taking Cairns in some time during the hol, whats the easiest way to travel is it from Darwin - Cairns, or Alice _ Cairns. Many thanks POEPAT
You can book the Ghan online directly with Great Southern Rail, the railway company that operates it: www.gsr.com.au For the other routes you'll need to take the plane.

Here's the link for The Ghan - http://www.gsr.com.au/site/the_ghan.jsp Suggest you sign up for their newsletter as they do have special deals for the off season. Some are VERY tempting. You've got heaps of time, so I'd wait until the specials come out and then plan/book accordingly.

You may want to consider Greyhound Australia's Croc Stopover Package from Darwin to Alice Springs (269 AUD). I would especially recommend stopping at the Mataranka Homestead.
