Drinking age

by charliegoose Online Now Feb 6, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Can you please tell me what age you need to be to drink on the strip in Albufeira?
We would like to go after leaving school in June when the prices are cheaper, but one of our group will still be 17, and the rest will be 18.
Is this a problem? Do we need to wait until we are all 18 and go when the prices are higher in August?
Thank you

The legal drinking age in Portugal is 18. Individual establishments may or may not have a higher age limit for entry.

Whether you feel you need to wait until you are all 18 is really up to you.

Correction, the legal drinking age here is still 16. But many of the clubs and some of the music bars have a minimum age entry of 21 and as all Portuguese adults have to carry ID, there is not much chance of you bluffing your way in as you would have to show your passport as ID.

My apologies. I had thought the change was due to take place in 2012. Perhaps it has not yet been enacted, or perhaps a decision not to carry it through was subsequently made?

They did raise the age for buying cigarettes etc to 18 but I don't think they ever got around to changing the drinking age as was announced late in 2011.

I found a newspaper article that stated opposition to the proposed change dated June 2012, suggesting that the age for buying beer and wine should remain at 16.

    But nothing since.

Certainly the signs I see in shops still say 16.

I think the government has more pressing concerns.

Thanks. I assume there's no indication of the proposed change being on the cards before June?

These things are usually sprung upon the unsuspecting populace with little warning! I shall keep watch.

And do they really think such a change is going to stop 16 and 17 years drinking?

They cannot afford to go out much, so get it from their parents or older siblings / friends. Same as always and anywhere.

My friend and I went to Albufeira some years ago, when we were both 17. We had no problems at all with partying and drinking on the strip :-)

Many bars now demand ID and some clubs have a minimum age policy. There have been problems with younger British, Dutch and German visitors in some music venues.

However the legal age is still 16. Here they sell beer in McDonalds!
