planning a trip of 10-13 days.

by nech56 Online Now Feb 19, 2013 at 2:19 PM

3 adults..young seniors plan to land in Anchorage. We need to spend from late Friday afternoon until Sunday am in Anchorage. Ideas for a 1 1/2 day trip from Anchorage and then leaving Anchorage again for 5 days, and then again for 2 1/2 days. We will have a car if needed but for shorter trips could us public transportation. Ideas on this? WE enjoy nature, scenery, easy hikes, cruises, wildlife, museums, history, gentle rafting and ? We plan to be there in July. Any other important things we need to know? thanks, Norma

For three people, a car is most likely your most economical choice, as well as giving the most flexibility. You never know when you'll find an amazing view or a moose grazing in a stream; and being able to stop and linger is a real plus.

Five day trip: Seward and/or Homer. The Kenai Peninsula in general. Take a cruise to see Kenai Fjord National Park. 2 1/2 day trip: Denali. This will be a bit rushed, but if the weather is clear, you'll want to at least get a glimpse of the place. 1 1/2 days: Valdez. Again, this will be a bit rushed, but perhaps you can START to drive there, and turn around when you realize you need to get back.

Thanks....how much time in Denali is good. I did not realize the trip of Steward + should be the longer one.

What is there to do in Anchorage or a few hours away.

In the city of Anchorage itself -- not much. There are places where you can experience beauty and wildlife just five minutes from city life, but why not just leave the city and get more of these? There's the Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, but even better is great hiking not far from the city limits: here's a good start for info:

First nite in ANC, then rent car and get out of town. Head to Talkeetna for a great laidback stay at the confluence of rivers. Then head up to Healy to stay for a Denali Park day bus tour. I agree with the Kenai Fjords tour as well, great scenery and water wildlife with stay in Seward. Just so much to see and do in that great State. Distances and driving times are deceiving. It's a big place! Gary
