Would you suggest a tour to Myvatn area or a day in the city with 7AM to 3Pm the time available? Also, is the town close to the port so walking is possible? If not, what means of transportation are available? Thanks.
If you can make it to Myvatn, then do! It's an extraordinary experience. And does wonders for your skin :-) Akureyri is a small town with not that much to do really. A little bit of shopping, a nice coffee house, a small area with original old houses and you could visit the local swimming pool which is a cultural thing in Iceland (the swimming pool includes various water features and temperatures). I remember there being busses from Akureyri airport. Though I have no details. It's quite a spectacular flight landing by the way.

oops, I misread. You are arriving per ship, not plane. However, the rest of my advice still stands. Enjoy!

The old part of Akureyri is around the harbour, and the shopping area is a few hundred meters away. Although 8 hours is not much time, I would go for Myvatn as well.

I would say do it, go to Myvatn either rent a car, take a bus or hire a taxi. It is just under 100 km to drive and on the way you will see a great waterfall named Godafoss. Bragi

We are in Akureyri on Aug 4 7:00-13:00. Cruise company trips as usual are grossly overpriced but I guess Myvatn is one we have to take (group of 3) unless anyone has a better suggestion?
