Another Hotel Question

I'm hoping to be in Aix next July. However, I hear there's a festival that month and hotels fill up early. How far in advance should I book my hotel? Also, will they use my credit card to hold the reservation, or would they more likely charge a deposit or the entire stay before I arrive?
