Need suggestions for cheap and affordable accommodations in Kyoto & Osaka

      Osaka May 21, 2013 at 10:37 PM

Hi guys, do you have any good recommendations for accommodation in Kyoto & Osaka area? My budget is USD $40-60(max) per night. For Kyoto, hotels are great but I would love to try the Ryokan type to experience the traditional Japanese style also accessible to Kyoto Station. And for Osaka, I prefer hotels somewhere around Namba or Dotonbori area and also easy access for everything especially transport. Thanks in advance! :)

      First time paragliding in japan

      Japan Jun 3, 2013 at 1:39 AM

      Hi!
My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to japan this july, and I am wondering if anyone know if it's possible to paraglide for tourists in Japan. We're traveling from Nagoya to Fukuoka, so preferably in a location somewhere between those places. We've never tried it before, so I guess it will have to be with some kind of paraglide school. I know it's a bit unusual question, but it would be really great to hear from anyone who has done it before, or know about a good school/location for us to try!

PS. I do speak some Japanese as I was an exchange student there 3-4 years ago, so we're not completely dependent on a English-speaking paraglide school.

    • cycling hiking and cities in japan

      Japan May 29, 2013 at 10:42 AM

      Good afternoon all

I was wondering if you could help me, I have 19 days in Japan starting late July. Im dead keen on getting a bit of the urban experience but also spending some time in the wilderness, doing some cycling, preferably with a few temples thrown in too. Very keen to climb Mt Fuji too (even though ive read it can be disappointing). Ive attempted to accomodate all this in the below itinearry and would really appreciate your feedback. is it too much travelling time not enough in one place / completely daft (e.g by missing the highlights (Nikko / Hiroshima / kobe) in favour of a spot of cycling/trekking) I realise the route is a little unconventional, throwing in some little port towns instead of the traditional must sees and perhaps this is a mistake - please enlighten me.

      Day 1 - 4: Tokyo
Day 4 - 5: Fly to Matsuyama (flights arent expensive at the mo), check out the castle and hot springs there.
Day 6 - 7: cycle up the Shimmaiko kaido --> overnight at one of the islands --> cycle on to onomichi , spend night there or Tomo.
Day 8: train to Kyoto, explore kyoto
      Day 9 - 10: explore kyoto / nara?
      day 11 - 12: Koya-san (stay in temple)
day 12 - 14: kumano kodo pilgrimage to nachi taisha / head to nagano and have a wander round the mountains (v open to suggestions here)
      day 15 - 16: climb mt fuji
day 17 - 18: Find some sort of beach? Izu peninsula? Any ideas?
      day 19: fly back.

Thanks for your help! Really appreciate it!

      JR Railpass

      Nagoya Sep 16, 2007 at 4:40 PM

My family and I are arriving at CENTRAIR and will be staying two nights in Nagoya. We also plan on visiting Kyoto where we will spend one night before returning to Nagoya. We will then continue on to Tokyo later that same day where we'll spend 4 nights before flying out of NRT. Does it make economical sense to purchase the JR Railpass to travel to these cities or would we better off to simply purchase our tickets at the station when we need them? I know the cost of the JR Railpass, but I don't know the fares of the tickets to get to the cities we want to visit if we travelled without the pass. These are the only rail trips I envision us taking, although we will use the subway system within the cities (and I understand day passes for that are available). It's my understanding that the subway system is not included in the JR Railpass. Is that true? Any recommendations? Thank you.

Highway buses (Kosoku Bus) in Japan?

Hi! I'll be making a 3-week trip to Japan this June. While I'll be taking the JR Rail Pass for one week in order to tour the easters parts of the country, I'm still interested in travelling with the highway buses some trips (mainly because it's cheaper). I have found information from http://www.japan-guide.com/ about the highway buses, but I'd like to ask some more: - how difficult it is to reserve the tickets (I don't speak Japan)? - is there a website where I could find the timetables and prices? - do the buses leave typically from train stations or are there separate bus stations? These are the trips I'm interested about: Nagoya - Kyoto Kyoto - Tokyo Tokyo - Nagoya Thank you all for your replies!
