Best route

by ohaiyo Online Now Jan 7, 2010 at 12:23 AM

Hi everyone,

I'm planning another trip top Taiwan. I plan to go to Alishan and Sun Moon Lake. I'm heading out from Taipei. Do I take the train to Taichung and then go to Sun Moon Lake? Is there a train from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake? How do I go to Alishan from Sun Moon Lake? Also what are the most logical accommodations to stay in?

Thank you

From Taipei > Sun Moon Lake (by Taiwan High Speed Rail and bus)

First Leg: From Taipei > Taichung HSR Station (in Wurih – outskirts of Taichung city). Fares vary depending on day and time of travel. Travel time: About 53 to 58 mins.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR): http://www.thsrc.com.tw

Second Leg: Nantou buses serve Taichung HSR Station > Sun Moon Lake route. Fare: NT$200 Travel time: About 1 hr 20 mins ~ 1 hr 30 mins.

    Nantou Bus: http://www.ntbus.com.tw/032.htm

In SML:Nantou shuttle buses operate buses along part of round-lake route (covering the main attractions) from 0640 hrs to 1800 hrs on weekdays, weekends and public holidays. The one day pass costing NT$80 allows unlimited travel on the shuttle buses for the day.Check these links for the bus schedules and various attraction stops:

    http://www.ntbus.com.tw/5-25.htm

One-day pass can be purchased from the counter staff at Shueishe Visitor Centre , the transportation hub at Sun Moon Lake.

Ci En Pagoda is located between Syuen-tzang Temple and Syuan-guang Temple stops and is not indicated in the Nantou round-lake shuttle bus route / schedule. Tell the driver you are heading to Ci En Pagoda and he will stop the bus at the directional sign marking the start of walking trail up the hill to Ci En Pagoda, otherwise he would not stop as it is not a designated stop in the bus route / schedule. It’s a much nearer walk (about 12~15 mins’ leisure walk) from there to Ci En Pagoda than to walk from Syuen-tzang Temple. Ita Thao Village (Dehua Village) can also be reached by boat from Shueishe Boat Wharf.

Tickets for boat tours of Sun Moon Lake are available at the 4 boat wharves around Sun Moon Lake -- Chaowu Wharf, Shueishe Wharf, Yidashao (also spelled Ita Thao) Wharf and Syuanguang Temple Wharf. Shueishe boat wharf is about 5 mins’ walk to Shueishe Visitor Centre, the main bus stop and transportation hub at Sun Moon Lake. Nearby is Chaowu Wharf. Yidashao Wharf and Syuanguang Temple Wharf are located across the lake.

Operating hours: 0800 to 1800 hrs daily
Duration of boat tour: About 1.5 hours.
Cost of boat tours: NT$300 (adult) NT$200 (children)

If embark at Shueishe boat wharf, usually stop at 3 attractions -- Lalu Island: 5 mins; Syuanguang Temple: 25 mins; Ita Thao: 30 mins.
    Sun Moon Lake boat rides:
    sunmoonlake.gov.tw/EN/020004...

There is a kiosk renting electric-charged motorcycles called Helio near the Shueishe Visitor Centre. The rental charge is NT$300 for 2 hrs (I think). A motorcycle licence is required.

    The economical way is to travel by Fong Long (Green Transit) bus from Sun Moon Lake to Shueili. Board a train running on Ji-ji branch line at Shueili Station to Ershuei Station. Transfer to another train at Ershuei to Chiayi Stationand take Chaiyi bus uphill to Alishan. (I'm not sure if there if this bus id operating just yet. I have heard from forumers that Minsu's there are arranging for rides up the Mountain.}

Xin Xin minsu provides the transport at a reasonable fee of NT$300/pax from Chia Yi. NT$400/pax if pick up is at Chia Yi HSR station.
    Xin Xin Minsu
Close proximity to Alishan Railway Station (2 mins’ walk) to the open car parking lot, bus station, Tourist Information Centre (Visitor Centre), shops, cafes, restaurants and 7-eleven convenience store.
